Just Thinking?

Waiting for the fire works to begin on the 4th of July a friend and I started a conversation about the recent Supreme court ruling on marriage. To make a long story short here is what we came up with: Like the Catholic Church we believe that marriage is as referred to in the Bible is known to be called; The Holy Sacrament of Marriage. Because it is from the Bible and is Holy and falls under the guidelines of a religious practice; What business does the State (Government, Feds) have in getting their nose into saying what is marriage?
One reason is they have made it a tax by making people having to get a marriage license before getting married. A marriage license is a tax on Religion. When the state stuck their nose into issuing marriage licenses they violated the First Amendment. Where is the ACLUASSES, or whatever they are called, you know those people who do not want us to pray period; on fighting for the separation of church and state on this one?
I was just thinking maybe I should not have been thinking so much. What are your thoughts on this?

  1. You are absolutely right and the ACLUASSES only interject when it’s the little people; school children that want to hand out a flier or say Jesus in a song, nursing home Bible studies, or a Manger scene, etc. They’re all for the gays because it isn’t about marriage to begin with!

  2. This is quite a question!

My thoughts: If the State doesn’t have some guidelines or rules defining and regulating marriage, you’d have a chaotic free-for-all. Bigamy and polygamy would be quite easy and/or acceptable. (Some religions allow this, so the religious part may not be a hindrance to having three or four spouses.)

People don’t need a marriage license if the church banns are published for three Sundays prior to the ceremony, so you can’t say the State always taxes marriages. In most cases they do, but the tax is universal; it isn’t imposed only on religious marriages.

A person doesn’t have to be religious to be married; it’s every bit as much a legally binding commitment between two people. Even atheists marry, as well as other non-Christian religions.

Holy matrimony as the Bible defines it, a marriage involving two believers and sanctified by God, is in a different ballpark. Vows are made in the presence of God, in the fear of God, and with witnesses to confirm this commitment. The couple respects the law of the land in that they register their marriage, but their commitment goes much deeper.

There was a time in Canada when the Anglican Church held sway, when any marriage ceremony not performed by an Anglican Church minister counted for nothing. A lot of non-Anglican couples did marry in their own churches, but the marriages were never legally recognized.

This is about what would happen if/when you take the State and its legal responsibility out of the thing. Anybody could do whatever they wish, wherever, in whatever church. Nothing would be legally binding except the present “common law” rules.

    • Christine, I think you have some good points yet, Marriage has nothing to do with the state why have they been given the power to say who is married and who is not to begin with? Before the United States was founded there was marriages and there was no state telling them who was married and who was not. When the state took contorl of marriage it longer was a Holy Sacrament. That is the problem marriage is no longer Holy. who do you wish to have control of marriage God or the state? Thank-you for you thoughts and God Bless you!

      • Before the United States was ‘founded’ as an independent country, it was a colony of Britain and marriages were done mainly by the Church of England, as it was here in Canada. The people who came over on the Mayflower were married in English churches before they left England.

Now the native North Americans had no marriages. In that sense you are correct. Except that the tribe was the civil authority and whatever ceremonies they used to unite one man and one woman could be called a civil marriage.

The fact is, there have been marriages since God united Adam & Eve in the Garden. Maybe that’s where you should go back to in our discussion. That was truly a Holy Matrimony with no earthly (civil) govt involved. 🙂

      • Thank-you Christine but you have no vote here in the US and do not live under our laws.
